The Ontario Intercollegiate Women’s Fastpitch Association (OIWFA) was formed in 2001 and was made up of only four teams. Over the past 13 years, the OIWFA has developed and grown to be sustainable with 13 member teams and servicing over 200 athletes. The majority of these teams are self-funded and are able to function only through fundraising, sponsorships and significant fees collected from athletes, receiving minimal (if any) financial or recognition support from their respective schools. All 13 teams have volunteer coaches who are highly qualified and offer countless hours year round to keep their teams functioning at a high level.

The OIWFA season runs for six consecutive weeks running from mid-September to the end of October. A total of a 22 game regular season is capped off with the top eight teams competing at a Provincial Championship weekend.

The OIWFA has undertaken many initiatives to draw attention to the league that we have proudly developed. Over the past three years, the OIWFA began streaming online the Provincial and National Championships, which have received thousands of views each of the past three years from over three different continents. In 2012, the OIWFA was featured on the Rick Mercer Report, and also became the first Canadian University sport to take a stance with the You Can Play Project to support LGBT athletes and in 2015, became the first university sport to stand with the student-athlete mental health initiative (SAMHI).

The objectives of the OIWFA are: (1.) To give women who are attending an Ontario University an opportunity to play fastpitch.  (2.) To foster new friends and give new experiences to the women/student athlete of each team by introducing them to other universities, to players from the other universities, and to foster respect and admiration for their fellow competitors.  (3.) To use Fastpitch Softball as a vehicle to help promote their University within their community.  (4.) To help promote Women’s Fastpitch Softball.
